چکیده

The confinement of male rats in complete dankness from birth until 47 days of age resulted in severe retardation of reproductive function. The supply of light-on condition for the last one week caused a remarkable overshoot of testosterone secretion beyond the level of intact animals, associating with a significant weight increase in accessory reproductive organs. Eye-enucleation nullified these effects. This androgen overshoot was considered to be occurred as a result of the removal of inhibitory effect of dark condition rather than a result of positive stimulatory effect of light-on condition. The possibility to simulate the inhibitory effect of dark condition was examined. The intra-ocular injection of a serotonin precursor (5-hydroxytryptophan) at the initiation of 7 days of light-on treatment, lowered both androgen titer and weight of accessory reproductive organs to the light-off level. This might suggest a possible role of serotonin as an inhibitory dark substance involved in neuroendocrine mechanisms.

Morphology of retinal photoreceptor layer in continuous light-exposed and dark-adapted male cats

The morphology of retinal photoreceptor layer was studied in continuous light-exposed and dark-adapteddomestic male cats (Felis catus). The eyes of 12 healthy adult cats (4 in continuous light-exposed group, 4 in continuous dark-adapted group, and 4 in control group) were routinely fixed and studied by electron microscope. Results showed that the general structure of photoreceptor layer in this...

The Effect of Estrogen on Passive Avoidence Memory in an Experimental Model of Alzheimer`s disease in Male Rats

Introduction: Estrogen is one of the gonadal hormones that has multiple beneficial actions in central nervous system and involves in learning and memory. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that impairs patient memory. The human nucleus basalis of Meynert (nBM) is severely affected in Alzheimer's disease. So in this study the effect of peripheral (intramuscul...

Effect of Continous Light and Darkness Exposures on the Pituitary-gonadal Axis and Thyroid Activity in Male Rats

The effects of constant light and dark exposure of pubertal male rats on the pituitary-gonadal axis and thyroid activity were studied. The indices of thyroid activity were weight of the thyroid gland, estimation of serum levels of thyroxine (T4) by radioimmunoassay (RIA) technique and histological studies of the thyroid gland. The indices of gonadal activity chosen were weight and histological ...

Effect of Eight Weeks of Endurance Training in Light and Dark Phases of Circadian Rhythm on the Oxidative Stress Index in Pancreas of Diabetic Mice

Introduction: Chronic hyperglycemia is associated with an increase in cellular damage due to oxidative stress in pancreatic tissue. The effect of exercise in different phases of the circadian cycle on protecting pancreatic tissue from oxidative stress in diabetic patients is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of endurance training in light and dark phase...

Changes in the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Axis in Adult Male Rats Poisoned with Proteus and Biscaya Insecticides

Background: Insecticides may have negative effects on reproductive organs. Given the interaction between leptin and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, we sought to investigate the changes in leptin and the HPG axis in adult male rats poisoned with Proteus and Biscaya insecticides. Methods: Our experimental subjects were 110 adult male Wistar rats (80–90 days of age; average weight=2...
